Welcome to the Goan Food Trail
Food
is much more than a means of survival; it is also a source of pleasure,
comfort, security as well as a unique cultural experience. While it
nourishes our bodies, it can also nourish our families and our
communities. It is one of the most important and constant aspects of
tradition and culture. Throughout the world, and especially in Goa, food
is used to celebrate holidays, rituals, and family gatherings. For
special occasions—and even for daily meals—our culture often determines
what, when, and how we eat.
Food
history is as important as a baroque church; these traditions connect
us to our heritage, our locale, and to one another. Food customs also
embody the wisdom gained and shared through thousands of years of
experimentation and observation. Our lifestyles today represent an
incredible diversity of food traditions. Prized ‘recipes’ comprising of
just visual cues of ‘a handful of this’ and ‘a pinch of that’ get
passed down through the generations evolving and adapting with time.
Many of us share that frustrating experience of not being able to
recreate that dish that is the star of our childhood nostalgia. This
blog aims at celebrating these often untold Goan family food traditions
and sharing my journey with food.
